The Biocolloids and Surfaces Laboratory is committed to upholding an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment where all members of all backgrounds can thrive, including but not limited to age, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual and gender identity, religion, ability, and socioeconomic status. We believe that diversity of thoughts, experiences, and perspectives drives scientific excellence, collaboration, and innovation. We are committed to ensuring all members are treated with dignity and respect in a supportive working environment. This is an ongoing effort, and we are dedicated to identifying and addressing barriers within our lab and holding ourselves accountable to these values to encourage a more inclusive community.
Students trained in our group gain a multidisciplinary skillset in colloid and surface science, microbiology, nanotechnology, and environmental science. Our trainees are developing valuable skills and knowledge relevant to a wide range of fields including energy, environmental protection, petrochemicals, food, pharmaceuticals and advanced materials.
Our alumni are now successfully employed in academia, industry, government agencies, or pursuing advanced degrees. For example, 12 alumni of the lab have secured professorships at other institutions (e.g., University of Toronto, McMaster University, University of Ottawa, University of Alberta, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Ecole de Technologie Superieure, Toronto Metropolitan University, Universidad Iberoamericana). Many of our undergraduate, M.Eng. and Ph.D. graduates are leading successful careers as engineers or consultants (e.g., GE Energy, Iogen Corp, Shell, Kraft Foods, Maple Leaf Foods, KIK, Opus DaytonKnight, Enerkem, AirBoss Defense). Others have pursued graduate studies at leading institutions (e.g., Cambridge University, ETH Zurich, University of Leeds, University of Toronto) or postdoctoral fellowships (e.g., Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems).
